Q & A: You asked about curtains and blinds, and we’ve answered!
The curtain and blind questions that keep us up at night! We collated all the most popular curtains and blinds questions our social media and customer service teams get asked daily and today we going to answer them all in one go!
Question 1
“Why do I need to buy bigger curtains than what my window actually is? “
A: This is a great question, and we get asked this often! We understand it can seem like a waste of money to buy a bigger curtain that what your window dimensions require but this is for good reason! We are sure we are not the first people to say it but hanging your curtains higher on your wall, and wider than your window frame, will add buckets of luxuriousness to the spatial awareness of your room! Not only do higher curtains make your ceilings appear taller, but wider curtains also make your walls appear larger and more open. When gathering your window measurements, we recommend to always opt for an outside mount and to add roughly 20-30cm extra onto each side of the width measurement to allow for ample ‘overhang’. When choosing your curtain online, always pick a curtain with an extra-long drop, or the longest drop that is available in that particular design. By doing this it will mean you can hang it higher above the top of the window frame and achieve that floor to ceiling look.

Question 2
“Should I purchase multiple curtains or just enough to fill the window? “
A: Short answer, yes and no. Long answer, it depends on what type of look you are hoping to achieve. If you are wanting to have full and plush window furnishings with a centre open, then yes, we highly recommend you purchase multiple single curtains to achieve that look and feel in your room. We might be biased but we truly feel centre open curtains always look more sophisticated and luxurious. Opening from the middle is also far more practical for high traffic areas. If you have an extra wide window we encourage you to opt for extra width curtains, or install two separate rods next to each other with a single curtain on each side to have sufficient coverage on the window.
Question 3
“I don’t plan on being in my house forever, is it worth getting curtains installed anyways? “
A: This is a question that could have many answers, but we will do our best to provide many different point of view and opinions. If you own your home, but you know it is not your forever home then you may be confused on whether or not is worth investing in window furnishings. There are many real-estate companies, professional property evaluators, and home staging agencies that will agree with us when we say that adding window furnishings like curtains or blinds to your home, regardless of whether you plan on staying there or not, is a great investment as it increases the value of the home in the long-term.
If you do plan to sell then adding curtains and blinds may give your house an upper hand in what currently is considered a very competitive and congested property market. Blinds and curtains make your home more ‘move-in ready’ to potentially buyers and this is a big selling point to always keep in mind. When people walk through your open home and they see curtains and blinds on the windows, it means there is one less thing for them to have to pay for when they move in. On the flip side of that, opting for ready to hang curtains and blinds actually lowers your upfront investment but still increases your potential return. If you are renting and want to add some warmth to your home, then adding ready to hang curtains can be a great choice because investment is low and the payoff is amazing – just make sure you get permission from your landlord first!
